The Blue Ridge Astronomy Club will meet on Thursday, April 24, 2008, at the Forest Public Library at 7:00 p.m.
Probing Planetary Formation
Antonio Hales,
ALMA Postdoctoral Fellow at the NRAO will talk on Probing Planetary Formation
Our current understanding of the
formation of planetary systems is strongly linked to astronomical
observations of gas and dust around young stars. It is at these early stellar
ages that planets are thought to form.
In this talk, Dr. Hales will summarize results from his and other works aimed at characterizing the processes that lead to planet formation. He will also describe the properties of newly discovered extra-solar planetary systems, and outline how present and future observatories will allow to probe planetary formation down to solar system scales.
